A seminal work in adoption research, this was the first doctoral thesis in Australia to address the issue of the loss of a baby to adoption from the mothers' perspectives. The author, the mother of two children last to adoption, locates the topic within historical and legal contexts and also explores the social and cultural influences in which allowed forced adoptions to take place. The significance of this thesis is that its findings underpinned subsequent research, often without correct citation or acknowledgement.
