The evolution of Within These Walls

You are here

Our organisation has evolved from two Facebook groups: Within These Walls and Australians Affected by Adoption Reconnecting by DNA (‘Australian DNA Hub’), both public and open sites, where people have come to express their feelings, find some solace from the circumstances of the past and to support one another in finding their own personal information.

The purpose of Within These Walls is to encourage, enhance and nurture the process of uniting the parents and children who have been touched by adoption; assist those affected to find resolution by finding their place in the world and through understanding and acceptance; and to provide advice in the use of DNA matching services to help establish or confirm family relationships.

The genesis of Within These Walls was prompted by my (Kerri) submission to the Senate Inquiry into Past Adoption Practices about how DNA testing was helping me connect to my family and to overcome two brick walls, having discovered my mother is an adoptee and that quite possibly my father is too. Through other search means, I located and made contact with my mother’s sister. My aunt and I had both been on the reunion register at Department of Community Services in NSW for a long time. The Department had known we were related, but had not been forth coming in telling us. DNA matching confirmed our family connection including that my aunt is a half-sister to my mother, that my parents were cousins and that I have Indigenous DNA in my background.
