Decisions part 2

The only option for Mum was to have me adopted, say nothing to the estranged husband, and tell the young European beau that her infant had died at birth. Or was she told that I had died? Whatever the reality, Mum kept her older children and had a life in front of her. Well her beau proved an excellent husband and good father, but Mum? Well I never knew as she died before I found her but, if Mum’s family are an indication, she was a fabulous mother.

My Mum no doubt suffered her decision over the years and a 1984 Western Australia psychological research project reported that, '… over 55% of relinquishing mothers without contact with the child had a sense of loss over 30 years; and over 50% had a deepening sense of loss exaggerated on anniversaries. Many said their pain would have been eased by knowledge of what happened to their child.'

So much for secrecy.
